Founded in 1843, the College is situated at the western end of the market town of Marlborough and occupies 286 acres of historic downland. The school is built around the former mansion-house of the Dukes of Somerset and around the Marlborough Mound, a Neolithic edifice dated at 2400 BC and whose Norman castle saw medieval kings hold court.
The College campus hosts a wealth of architectural styles ranging from 18th and 19th century houses, an art deco listed building, 1960s dining hall and modern classroom blocks. Two buildings deserve a special mention; the Memorial Hall and the Chapel. The Memorial Hall was opened in 1925 and is the principal memorial in the College to the 749 men who gave their lives in the First World War. Today, the hall is used for musical events, plays, lectures plus much more. It comprises a semi-circular auditorium of stepped seats (capacity 560) with an ambulatory at the rear and a generous stage. The current Chapel, St Michael and All Angels, was consecrated in 1886 and is considered one of the finest buildings produced by the Gothic Revival. Three aspects of particular note include the window designed by Burne-Jones and made under the direction of Old Marlburian William Morris, Eric Gill’s sculpture of “The Virgin and Child” and finally a series of 12 large murals by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope. With a capacity of 732 people, the Chapel is used for weddings (of Old Marlburian’s and staff of the College only), memorials, carol services and musical events. Recent years have seen impressive investment at Marlborough and the College campus possesses a collegiate atmosphere that many universities would envy. Just some of the stunning facilities available include a 25 metre, 8 lane competition indoor swimming pool, Observatory, three theatres, two lakes, a beautifully restored Cricket Pavilion, AstroTurf pitches and an international standard athletics track. In addition to a unique range of historic and modern, indoor and outdoor spaces to hire, Marlborough College offers free on-site parking, 24 hour security, free Wi-Fi and an experienced and dedicated in-house Catering and Events team to make sure your event runs smoothly.
