Tonbridge School, founded in 1553, occupies an extensive site of about 160 acres on the northern edge of the town of Tonbridge. The main buildings of the present school date from the second half of the nineteenth century sitting alongside contemporary additions, creating a wonderful location for events, functions, wedding ceremonies and receptions.
Tonbridge School offers a rich diversity of venues and provides a perfect combination of historical surroundings with modern facilities. An extensive new sports centre, the Tonbridge School Centre, was opened in 2008 and was used as an official training centre for the 2012 Olympics, playing host to the pre-Olympics training for the Australian Athletics team. Other millennium builds include the E.M.Forster theatre, opened in summer 2000, and the recent refurbishment of the Smythe Library, opened in 2016. The school is very well provided with auditoria and lecture theatres with a range of capabilities. The main Theatre Auditorium and Big School both seat 400. The Recital Room, within the music school, and the Cawthorne Lecture Theatre each seat 160, whilst small groups make use of The Vere Hodge Lecture Room (seating for 60) and the Earl Lecture Theatre in the Biology Department (50).
